Over the years, the World Cup has produced some of football’s biggest shocks. Some are such that even today its difficult to believe. Below are some of the upset that I feel is worth mentioning. The list below is random:
Year : 1982 Spain
Match Between: Northern Ireland 1-0 Spain
The world cup which was held in Spain (1982), one of the biggest upset was defeating the host team by N.Ireland. This victory by Ireland is still date one of their greatest ever international moment.
Match Between: Algeria 2-1 West Germany
Another shocking defeat in the 1982 world cup was when Algeria defeated Germany.
Year: 1990 Italy
Match Between: Cameroon 1-0 Argentina
In the opening match Cameroon caused one of the biggest shocks of all by beating the reigning World champions - Maradona and all. Also it was during this world cup Roger Milla became a household name in Cameroon. They carried out their campaign still the quarter finals.
Match Between:Costa Rica 1-0 Scotland
It was one of Scotland’s worst World Cup results, after this the Costa Ricans went on to beat Sweden in their next match.
Year:1994 USA
Match Between:Bulgaria 2-1 Germany
Two goals in three minutes from Hristo Stoichkov and Yordan Letchkov caused this major shock in 1994.
Year: 2002 Korea / Japan
Senegal 1-0 France
History was repeated just like the opening game in 1990 where Argentina was defeated, the same happened Senegal defeated reigning World Champions 1-0 in the opening game.
